Why Comox real estate listings are attracting much more than retirees these days

Thinking about buying a home in Comox? If not, perhaps it’s time you did!

Once thought of as an idyllic seaside retirement village, the town of Comox is quickly outgrowing its sleepy reputation.

Today’s Comox by the Sea offers a full oceanside experience, with a little something for everybody – providing, of course, you have the energy and exuberance to take it on! From kiteboarding at Goose Spit to fine dining and even finer shopping, Comox has a lot more going on than you may have heard. It’s no wonder Comox real estate, including some phenomenal waterfront real estate, is perennially popular!

For a taste of the aquatic pursuits for which so many in the Comox Valley flock to Comox, start at Goose Spit. The town’s most accessible beach, Goose Spit is the local go-to for sports like stand-up paddleboarding (“SUP”ing), kayaking or just plain swimming. On hot summer days, the spit feels almost tropical – hence the locals’ nickname of “Little Mexico” for one of its sandy inner beaches. When the wind picks up, so do the sailboats, kite boarders and windsurfers; with calm water on the inside and chop on the outside, Goose Spit offers a challenge for all skill levels.

Meet me at the Comox Marina!

If you don’t have experience to tackle these activities by yourself, you can sign up for a sailing or SUP course from Compass Adventure, situated in the heart of Comox Bay Marina Park. (They also rent SUPs, kayaks and sailboats.)

And since you’re at the Marina anyway, you’re going to want to pick up some of the freshest seafood on the planet at Comox’s own Fisherman’s Wharf. Depending on the season, you can purchase prawns, shrimp, salmon, tuna and halibut directly from the local fishermen who ply the shimmering waters of the Salish Sea.

Of course, when you’re living in the Comox Valley, you’re not going to want to cook for yourself all the time – especially not with so many great restaurants within a short drive or stroll! Comox once again has you covered, from gelato to sushi, Indian to Italian and contemporary to just coffee. As an added bonus, many Comox eateries feature oceanside patios from which to enjoy the Comox Valley’s locally produced (and often award-winning) food and drink.

Get out and explore the Town of Comox

After indulging in any or all of the above, hike off your meal on one of the many trails etched into Comox’s impressive geography. Some wind their way through towering firs; others hug the contours of the sea or weave through the eclectic boutiques of downtown Comox. Stop in at one of those shops for a self-guided walking tour brochure; while you’re at it, stroll along Comox Avenue to see the unique treasures that await the casual seaside shopper.

When you make Comox your home, you’ll have plenty of opportunities to experience the many festivals Comox hosts each summer, celebrating everything from fine art and First Nation culture to local shellfish and seaside shenanigans. On August long weekend alone (“Festival Weekend” in Comox), you can take in as many as four different festivals.

The Town of Comox – this cosy little community perched on the edge of the ocean – has a heck of a lot going on. Make time to experience everything Comox has to offer.
